WiTricity (wireless electricity)

Hello all,

Marin Soljačić ( A physics professor)  couldn’t sleep while his wife’s mobile kept beeping for low battery and he was so lazy to recharge it, So instead of taking a hammer to the phone, Soljačić marveled at the fact that this device, and billions of others like it, was sitting a few feet away from all the electricity it could ever need. Why couldn’t it receive power wirelessly, just as laptops get Wi-Fi ?

after alot of research Soljačić  learned that if you could get two magnetic fields to resonate , they could transfer an electric current. With two large magnetic coils, he transfered 60 watt wirelessly to  power a light bulb.

one would ask if it was safe to transfer electricity wirelessly ?

“There’s a real perceptual problem,” says CEO Eric Giler Soljačić’s  employer. “People think we’re putting electricity in the air, and that’s called lightning, and they know to stay away from that.”

In fact, the coils turn electricity into magnetic fields, then back into electricity. Magnetic fields interact weakly with humans; as far as the fields are concerned, they are no different from air. Giler makes a point of standing between the coils whenever he demonstrates the technology.

At the Nikkei electronics conference in Tokyo in October, he was able to power a 1,000-watt klieg light from across the room — a big improvment since the  first experment ..

Flying cars !!!!

Hi there,

Did you notice that all the movies talking about the future got air transportation every where??

well… these movies were based on scientific bases.

can you imagine yourself flying your own vehicle around the world ?!
The folks at NASA have built something called “The Highway in the Sky.” It’s a computer system designed to let millions of people fly whenever they please, and take off and land from wherever they please, in their very own vehicles.

people started building flying vehicles that you can buy so very soon every one will be able to fly with his own vehicle

One of those people is an inventor named Woody Norris, he received America’s top prize for invention. It’s called the Lemelson-MIT award — a half-million dollar cash prize to honor his life’s work, which includes a brand new personal flying machine.

Norris, 66, asked one of his test pilots to demonstrate the AirScooter for 60 Minutes on a hilltop outside San Diego, Calif. It can fly for 2 hours at 55 mph, and go up to 10,000 feet above sea level.

i expect that 10 years from now, flying cars will replace the regular cars.

here is a small video that demonstrate how the flying car might look like .

EyePoint

Hi all,

do you hate the computer mouse or pads ?

would you like to surf the internet with your eyes  instead ?

if you answered yes, then you might be interested to know about the EyePoint system developed by Stanford University doctoral researcher Manu Kumar.

“Using gaze-based interaction techniques makes the system appear to be more intelligent and intuitive to use,” says Kumar. “Several users have reported that it often felt like the system was reading their mind.”

Here’s how it works: While looking at a screen, the user presses a hot key on the keyboard, magnifying the area being viewed. The user then looks at the link within the enlarged area and releases the hot key, thereby activating the link.
several orders can be given, like clicking, moving the cursor, drag and drop…..etc.
Eye tracking, which has been around for decades, typically uses infrared devices embedded into a headset or a monitor frame. The devices track the centers of the user’s pupils and then calculate which part of the screen the user is viewing.

This method, however, is not 100% accurate . but still its a cool thing to try .

Computerized eye lens(Bionic)

Hi there,
we all know about the medical lens that’s used to correct the vision, but lately there were some studies on other useful stuff lens can do.
in movies we often see lots of those fiction goggles or lens that dose lots of cool stuff like zooming in and out, verifying the person, estimating the distance…… etc.
but do they really exist ?
in 2008 a team from university of Washington began a research on that matter, and they created a prototype of the Bionic lens.

The prototype device contains an electric circuit as well as red light-emitting diodes for a display, though it does not yet light up. The lenses were tested on rabbits for up to 20 minutes and the animals showed no adverse effects.

“Ideally, installing or removing the bionic eye would be as easy as popping a contact lens in or out, and once installed the wearer would barely know the gadget was there” said Parviz ,a UW assistant professor of electrical engineering.

There are many possible uses for virtual displays. Drivers or pilots could see a vehicle’s speed projected onto the windshield. Continues  monitoring the health of the body . Video-game companies could use the contact lenses to completely immerse players in a virtual world without restricting their range of motion. And for communications, people on the go could surf the Internet on a midair virtual display screen that only they would be able to see.

the Bionic lens are used for the blind people,it lets them see again in black and white, but with further research everything is possible.

one of the problems the research team is facing is how to transmit power witlessly to the lens, once the problems are solved the lens will provide a super human vision for the one who is wearing it .
here is a photo of the lens:

have a nice day :D

Casio XJ-A135 Projector can it replace TV’s ?!

Hi there,
i was thinking about buying a new 60 inch TV,i found  that it will cost a lot of money.
then i decided to search for a new substitute, so i searched the internet for projectors, after hours of research i realized that a projector can’t replace a TV since the lamp life time dose not exceed 2000 hours.
but recently Casio produced a new projector; the lamp life  goes up to 20000 hours.
if we decided to replace  TV’s with Casio XJ-A135 Projector we have to compare all the advantages and disadvantages of the TV and the projector:
lets take 60″ BRAVIA EX700 Series HDTV to represent TV’s
advantages of the 60″ BRAVIA EX700 Series HDTV :
1- most of the TV companies claim that their TV’s last for 100000 hours which is 5 times the projector
2- 60″ BRAVIA EX700 Series HDTV supports (1920 x 1080) pixels while the projector supports 1024×768.
3- The TV is brighter than the projector, the projector has 2000 lumens, you will be able to see clearly even in the middle of the day but not as clear as in the TV.
4- the TV has a faster launch than the projector, the projector takes 8 seconds to launch.
now as for the advantages of the projector :
1- the projector offers you a 100 inch screen while the TV offers 60 inch screen.
2- the weight of the projector (2kg) is way less than the TV.
3- the projector is more portable than the TV.
4- the projector costs way less than the TV, since the projector only costs 1120 dollar and the TVcosts 3500 dollar

now, lets say that we use the projector for  8 hours a day on average, the projector should live 6.9 years.

in conclusion , i decided to go for the projector since it has a 100 inch screen and coasts less, and i can move it to where i want without breaking my back.

here is some pictures of  Casio XJ-A135 Projector:

How To Cheat In School Using Your Ipod Or Cellphone !!

We All Do It :D ....OPS ! ;)

The Past

The Baby Boomer generation occasionally cheated by asking a friend for a few answers on homework. There were those glances at “Richard’s” test because he always did well. And, when desperate after being ill, a few may have asked to copy an entire assignment. When caught, there was shame and parents were horrified that their child was not being honest.

Today

Cheating is not only continuing in schools today, but it is much more frequent and bold. Students go on MSN at home and compare answers. They sit in the commons area in school and copy an assignment in the presence of peers. Some go into lockers and take another student’s completed work and pass it off as their own leaving their friend stranded with a zero for a grade. And, when parents are told that their child was caught cheating, the reaction can be surprising. Many parents are still extremely disappointed in their child, but some deny their child could do such a thing. Some parents even use this incident to accuse the teacher of lying or finding fault with the assignment as unreasonable and anyone with a brain would cheat just to complete it.

Get Rid of Facebook Addiction NOW !!

Facebook Addiction !!

Its been surveyed that every 1 out 4 person in US use facebook. and the people getting addicted to facebook are increasing day by day.

So here are the steps you can use to get rid of facebook addiction.

01 – Admit you have a problem – This sounds like the first step to any other addiction. you ask yourself “What did I just accomplish by checking Facebook?” Ha! If only I had that much self-control over my Facebook addiction. Well, at least I admit to it!

02 – Define your goals on Facebook – Hmm … I never really had any goals with Facebook. Although maybe my goal should be to reach 5,000 friends. That surely would get me to login more frequently. Just logging in to check on friends’ birthdays, keep track of old friends, etc. Once you catch yourself going off track, log off. If only it was that easy!

03 – Make a Facebook Schedule – Seriously? If you find yourself scheduling Facebook into your daily schedule, this should be a serious warning sign. I suggests that “after each Facebook goal, write down how much time and at what frequency you’ll need to be on Facebook to achieve that goal.” Are they serious? Based on the calculations they suggested, you end up using Facebook for 6 hours and 20 minutes a week. I think this is still a relatively significant amount of time, although I spend much more time on the site.

04 – Think of other things you could be doing – Duh! This is a no brainer. I could be at the gym, socializing in the real world or a million other things but there is a reason I logged on in the first place. I’m starting to think that these suggestions are totally useless!

05 – Leave Facebook – This should have been number one! If you are spending way too much time on Facebook, quit cold turkey. It’s like having your cell phone turned off for 24 hours. Once you do it, you will realize how dependent you have become and think twice about your usage.

06 – Find a substitute – This one is good. Facebook taking up too much time? Find another site that isn’t as good! Someone says “if you find you’re at a computer during critical relapse time, find another website to log onto and read instead of Facebook.” Facebook relapse? This is a little crazy.

Core i7 iMacs Showing Up DOA !!

I7 IMac

Apple’s new Core i7-based iMac might be a performance monster, but it looks like the whole family’s having some problems getting out of the gate: in addition to the previously-noted performance issues with the Core 2 Duo models, a quick glance across Apple’s support forums and on other Mac boards around the web reveals that some machines are showing up DOA and / or with cracked screens. We’re a little more familiar with the DOA issue, since the new i7 we just bought doesn’t boot at all, but the cracked screen issue seems to be equally common and mostly affecting the bottom left corner, from what we can tell. Now, our review Core 2 Duo 27-inch iMac is perfectly fine, andChris Ziegler’s new Core i7 machine – NS2Y9QB3AS5J – doesn’t have any problems either, so these obviously aren’t universal issues, but if you’re about to stick one of these under the tree for someone it might be wise to do some surreptitious testing first!.
